Is this something that should be thought about for self-defense; in order to be better prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones? 100% YES!
The first thing to note is that the true nature of learning a martial art is to train so that you can avoid a physical confrontation to begin with. As you grow into a powerful and technical Jiu Jitsu grappler, the more it opens your eyes to the fact that you never truly know what a random person on the street can do. Learning Jiu Jitsu will give you the confidence and the abilities to become the absolute best version of yourself; an amazing goal to accomplish in your lifetime.
WHAT IS JIU JITSU?
Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that teaches you how to grab a hold of someone and bring them to the ground where it limits their ability to move. You also learn how to advance into a dominant position in order to apply a join lock or chock and subdue your opponent. With less than a year of Jiu Jitsu training, under the right curriculum and training methodology, you will be able to safely defend yourself against the average Joe who wouldn’t even know what Jiu Jitsu is.
WHY IS JIU JITSU SO EFFECTIVE?
Jiu Jitsu techniques are taught by their validity and practicality. If the technique doesn’t work, then we stop using it. The beauty of this martial art is that when a technique does work, it is observed and tested multiple times on bigger and smaller, stronger and faster people in order to truly understand the move at its deepest level. Jiu Jitsu focuses on leverage, timing and strategy, which is why it is extremely effective for self-defense.
DOES IT WORK FOR ALL BODY TYPES?
In Jiu Jitsu, there are strategies for all shapes and sizes. You will rarely encounter anyone training in Jiu Jitsu, with the same game as someone else. Everyone has a truly unique style to their game that they will develop from the ocean of techniques available. This allows every person the opportunity to maximize their given skills and talents.
CAN THIS WORK ON MULTIPLE ATTACKERS?
Unfortunately, unlike the movies, to have the ability to take on more than one attacker is going to be very difficult and a very unlikely win. Click here to read our post with tips on How to Defend Against Multiple Attackers. The only way to win a situation with multiple attackers would be if they fight you one at a time and lets me honest, that is extremely unrealistic.
IS THIS SAFE TO PRACTICE?
Absolutely! Jiu Jitsu is safe to train but it also depends on the academy you have chosen to train at. Here at Stasis, we strive to provide an academy with an atmosphere that is encouraging and safe. This way you are able to get the most out of training. Click here to read more about what you should look out for when you enter an academy for the first time. The beauty of Jiu Jitsu is that it's very low impact on the body which means that we have the option to train at a higher intensity if needed, with very low odds of getting injured. For example: Boxing can’t be trained at a max intensity all the time otherwise you will receive a serious concussion or other serious injuries, without a doubt. Jiu Jitsu allows you to train at that higher intensity way more often, therefore you will grow immensely and at a faster rate.
IN CONCLUSION
Jiu Jitsu is an amazing martial art for self-defense. You will not only enjoy the training but also will see just how fulfilling and empowering it is in your journey towards self-mastery.
